She is a mix of Italian and Irish ancestry and her sister is the Academy Award nominated Rooney Mara. Kate said, I grew up in New York, so every home game we would wake up, go to church and drive an hour to the stadium in New Jersey. Every Sunday, it was church, then football (askmen.com).
Kate began acting with she was nine in community theater and school plays. Kate Mara was shy growing up. Painfully shy. I hated school. The thought of sitting in a room with twenty kids my age and everybody talking freaked me out.
When asked by Sports Illustrated if a player ever asked her, she said, Yes. But you didnt ask me if he was in the NFL.
Kate Mara graduated a year early from high school and got into the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She deferred her studies because she was working as an actress and ultimately decided not to attend.
At the age of thirteen, Kate Mara made her TV debut in Law & Order. Other parts followed, including roles in Madigan Men, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Everwood, Nip/Tuck, Cold Case, Boston Public, CSI: Miami and CSI.
She appeared in even more shows, such as Jack & Bobby, 24, Entourage, American Horror Story and House of Cards.
Kate Mara made her film debut in Random Hearts and later got roles in Joe the King, Tadpole, Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, The Californians, Brokeback Mountain, We Are Marshall, Shooter and Transsiberian, among many others.
She told Esquire, All the actors I respect, especially old-Hollywood actors, the reason I think so many of them have had long careers is that there is a sort of mystery about them. You dont know what they do on Friday nights when they go home from work. You have no clue. You have this sort of fantasy about them.
Regarding musicals, Kate Mara said, Id love to [be in one]Im such a huge fan of BroadwayId jump at the chance to do it. I just havent had the opportunity yet.
When asked what her best feature is, Kate Mara replied, My hair. Even when I was a kid, I had this insane head of flaming hair. It looked like a wig.
Kate Mara lives in Los Angeles, but spends a lot of time in New York.
